Initial Thoughts on 6.20 'The Stranger'

Well, well. I am quite pleasantly surprised by this episode. Team interaction in the beginning! Loved Reid's little spooky 'narration' - although I readily admit it was more MGG than Reid actually. Moments like this were sorely missed in this season. Hmm...it must be an interesting slasher flick (is there one?) for Reid to be still excited over it the next morning. Rossi gives the "why can't I run away faster enough than he could talk" look.

Nice build-up to the end, and I'm sure a few people would have jumped at certain points when the unsub suddenly appeared. Got a 'When A Stranger Calls' vibe here. And the victims - oh wha - ouch. That's a brutal place to put a knife in, you sick twisted bastard of an unsub. Would it qualify for him to have an Oedipus complex if Kate was his step-mum?

On Hotch: Oh really, Hotch, I do think Strauss is right, you know. What makes you think that you, especially you, of all people, should be exempted from assessment? Strauss might have been a relentless prick, but I did agree with her viewpoint (for the record third time in the entire show's history). Again, it's two times in a row now Hotch went in to negotiate with the unsub. At least, he kept his vest on this time.

Seaver. Not too bad actually the way she talked down to the unsub. Didn't mind her too much actually. However, I'm betting there's still going to be a great hoo-haa over her increased screen presence in this episode anyway. I guess it's okay she didn't take over the whole episode and become Super-Profileress.

In the end, Hotch and Strauss ain't too different after all. I do appreciate the times when they show Strauss isn't always the stereotypical obstructive bureaucratic evil lady boss who gets in Hotch's way. Hotch getting to be in charge of several departments now? He's heading for a massive burnout, I'm sure of it, by Season 7. Strauss going away for a few months - is she sick, or her child sick, or family issues?
